Help Us Launch our First Locally Themed Exhibit in our new expanded facility: The Purple Urchin Sensory Room
This is an exciting opportunity to partner with us at Mendo LEAP as we begin a new chapter in serving children and families in Mendocino County. We are currently building out our new Development Center—and the very first themed exhibit in our expanded facility will be our Purple Urchin Sensory Room.
We are currently seeking sponsors to help us bring this exhibit to life. Sponsorship contributions will support specialized sensory equipment, custom-designed interactive displays, and environmental education tools.
Your support would not only create a safe, enriching space for neurodivergent children—it would also highlight your commitment to local families, environmental education, and inclusive community spaces.
This immersive space will serve children with sensory processing challenges while also educating visitors about the urgent environmental issues facing our coast—specifically the overpopulation of purple urchins, the decline of bull kelp forests, and the impact on local marine life and fisheries. As the first of several exhibits in our expanded facility, this room sets the tone for an entire center designed around local ecology, conservation efforts and community resilience.

💜 Why the Purple Urchin Room Matters
Sensory regulation is vital for children with Autism, ADHD, trauma, and other neurodivergent needs—but in rural areas like ours, access to calming, adaptive spaces is scarce.
Mendo LEAP’s Purple Urchin Room will provide a soothing, sensory-safe haven while teaching kids about a real local issue in a creative and playful manner: beautiful yet invasive sea urchins destroying our coastal kelp forests and harming marine life.
